“Miss Mary”

Another of Miss Jenny’s running mates, at least until they had a falling out, was Miss Mary.  Proprietress of a corner grocery on Constance Street, it was hard to say where the grocery ended and her residence began.  By the time harkins, the florist arrived in the neighborhood there wasn’t much grocery business being done.

Miss Jenny and Miss Mary went out on adventures together such as going to Canal Street on the Magazine bus.  For a change of scene from her own overstuffed abode, Miss Jenny would sometimes spend the night at Miss Mary’s.

The great falling out occurred after one of the break-ins of Miss Jenny’s house.  Of course the explanation from Miss Jenny stretch credulity a bit.

“Well, you see, Jawn, there I am sleeping, minding my own business.  Then I think I hear this bird chirping.  So I get up to investigate, and what do you think I found?”

She continues:  “I think the noise must be coming from up under a sheet covering up a big box in the corner.”

 “And?”

“Well, I couldn’t believe my eyes.  There was my television set that was stole from my house just the week before!”

As the saying goes, the best defense is a good offense.  Miss Mary ignored the television on her property, and began her own story of wrong-doing:  “That Jenny,” she charged.  “Don’t you know I caught her stealing my step-ins, and that’s why she accusing me!”

That was the end of a decades-long friendship.

Latest Wedding Trend:

It seems the wedding part of our business is constantly evolving.  In the good old days, local folks would come to us, and we would do their wedding flowers.

Then the flower business saw the development of niche markets.  Taking away the local wedding business were what Mom and Pops call “kitchen witches.”  These are interlopers who do weddings out of their kitchens.  They enlist friends as part-time workers because “it’s so much fun!”  With such low overhead the witches have priced the real florists out of the market, with the exception of our most loyal customers.

A trend we have noted before is the development of the “destination wedding” market.  Since Katrina an unbelievable number of couples have chosen New Orleans as the site of their weddings.  Thanks to our internet presence, they find us, and often the entire process is handled via e-mails.

The latest trend is “do it yourself wedding flowers.”  It began with the direct shippers in California who put together boxes of flowers they would ship for the do-it-yourselfers.

With the natural look of wedding flowers today, many people do a very creditable job of fashioning their flowers.

The ship from the farm approach allows little flexibility, however.  That’s where we come on the scene.  When the do-it-yourself bride contacts us there is the possibility of putting together just the right amount of flowers customized to need.  The flowers are here ready to be used, and harkins, the florist has helped with another perfect wedding.

Care and Handling of.................

Chrysanthemum, Pompon Chrysanthemum, Spider Mums, Fuji Mums, Daisy Mums

Chrysanthemum x morifolium

Origins
Native to Europe, Asia and South Africa, chrysanthemums are aromatic annual and perennial herbs or subshrubs that are members of the Compositae family that includes some 100 to 200 species.

The common names used to describe these flowers--pompons, spiders, Fujis and daisies, to list a few--reflect the genera's diversity of shape and size. Any effort to list the most popular of these white, yellow, orange, pink, red, bronze and purple colored species would be incomplete.

Availability and Vase Life
Modern growing techniques make chrysanthemums available year round, and with proper care these flowers can last from 7-14 days.

Care and Handling
Upon receipt, recut chrysanthemums under water, removing about 1 inch from the stem, along with foliage that will fall below the waterline or that is yellowing. Although fresh flower food may cause foliar yellowing, it extends the blooms' lives. Avoid pounding or splitting chrysanthemum stems.

Design Uses
Because of their diverse sizes and shapes, chrysanthemums may be used as either form or filler flowers in floral designs. Especially great to use this time of year! Check out the new green fuji mums, and button poms. They add such a spark to any arrangement.
